The Dimage Scan Elite II uses a “live feedback” system that I found to work quite well, at least when given a nice contrasty chunk of image to work with. I’ll probably switch to Plustek when these eventually fail, instead of going the used route, though. Unlike most other scanners testing with a glass plate USAF with the resolution chart metal deposited on it, showed both vertical and horizontal resolution to be very close to that figure. Their XA model has a very similar design. The standard unit ships equipped to scan 35mm film, and an optional adapter allows scanning of APS film. All forums Konica Minolta Talk Change forum.

Supposedly if you use the SCSI interface it goes much faster, but supporting that is more difficult now with modern operating systems.
This flatbed also does film up to about 58mm wide. If you plan to manipulate the scanned images much on the computer, you’re better off leaving the unsharp masking alone until you’re done with your retouching.

Some of the flatbed scanners have the same problem with lenses and are infamous for not resolving the potential of the sensor count. The GEM button directly to the right activates a full scan of the selected portion of the image indicated by a crop box which can be adjusted over the preview image.
Clicking on the Digital GEM button at the top of the preview window enables this tab, so you can adjust the amount of the “GEM” processing that is applied. The right window of the tab holds the same image resolution and size options, though the buttons that line top of the window change.
You simply lift up the top pressure plate, position the film in the bottom tray lining up frames with their indicated slotsand replace the top plate. No sharpening applied here. This produces maximum image sizes of 2, x 4, pixels for 35mm, or 1, x 3, pixels for APS. You can adjust the Tone Curves by creating points on the curve and dragging them.
That being said, I scan much of my work at ppi rather than the full because the shots simply don’t warrant the full resolution of theso the lower resolution of the Scan Sca II may be just fine.
It autofocuses for the first minnolta of any leite, but after that will generally not refocus for subsequent prescans of the same frame.
The biggest downside besides what I’ve noted before is that you manually have to move the film carrier between frames which makes the process slower. I found both holders slide and 35mm film to be very effective and easy to use, with a variety of small design tweaks that made them easier to work with.
As it is, short of repeated trial and error, there’s no good way to tell the effect of adjustments you’re making on the imnolta picture. Although you’ll see that its performance is about equivalent to bit scanners I’ve tested in the past. Chromatic aberration in ellite corners of the scans was also very low. You will get more responses there than here where majority are Dimage digicam users.

I was somewhat surprised by the scn of its scans, given that it uses a diffuse, fluorescent light source, which I’d always associated with slightly softer-looking scans. A series of tabs above the preview area and utility window provide access to controls for different stages of the scanning process, and include Index, Prescan, Image Correction, and Digital GEM headings.
The Auto button at the bottom of the window applies any automatic adjustment, wlite any change can be undone by pressing the Reset button. I don’t have any really suitable film to test this with myself, but I’ve seen any number of samples from the same technology on other scanners that demonstrate its capabilities.
Thank you in advance! Once connected to the computer, the Dimage Scan Elite II is controlled through an excellent software interface that I’ll describe in eliite detail below. I do get significantly better results on the Elite II than I do on my Epson V flatbed with the transparency adapter.
The black bar shows a measure of how good the focus currently is, while the white bar shows the highest level that’s been reached since you opened minnolta window.
Is it a big difference between Minolta Dimage Elite II and Elite 5400 scanners?
Kinolta, the scanner’s autofocus system looks at the center of the frame to perform its focus adjustments. The thing to keep in mind is that these colors are inverses of the ones you’re familiar with.
With myI have scanned 8X10s a section at a time and stitched them together semi-successfully. Also constructed of heavy plastic, the slide holder features is a single-unit design, similar to the holder used on the original Dimage Scan Elite.
While the tendency is to focus on extreme cases like the piece of film I showed above, its real usefulness comes in removing the little bits of mknolta and scah that are almost impossible to entirely eliminate short of a clean-room environment.
Two sets of pressure bars on either side of each slot hold the slide in place, automatically adjusting for a variety of slide mount thicknesses.
